Legends and Literature

Published March 16, 2013

Legends and literature in music are highlighted in Ludwig van Beethoven's Leonore Overture, No. 3 and Franz Liszt's gripping tone poem Hamlet, S. 104. The winner of the DuPage Symphony's 2013 Young Artists Auditions, violinist Serena Harnack, performs selections from the Violin Concerto No. 4 by Henri Vieuxtemps. The program concludes with the 1911 version of Igor Stravinsky's Petrushka, the second of the composer's groundbreaking ballets commissioned for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, which vividly recount the poignant Russian folk tale about a straw puppet that magically comes to life, develops real emotions, and experiences the unhappy consequences of human behavior.

Barbara Schubert and the DuPage Symphony Orchestra perform at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville, IL, 16 March 2013.
